I've always been a fan on mini four-wheel drives, like the Suzuki Jimny and Daihatsu Rocky. I decided to create my own in a slightly toony style, completely in ZBrush.
My collection of reference images I started with, I wanted something small, open and with spot lights
I then created several quick silhouette drawings spending no more than a few seconds on each one. the one in the top left was starting to look right.
I traced the best looking silhouette with a finer brush and added more detail. I then created more detailed sketches until I got something I happy with
I scaled up the best sketch and added finer detail
I then added colour. I liked the idea of 90's paint scheme with pin strips and graphics to suit the boxy body shape
Using my final reference image in Zbrush I blocked out a base mesh by dyna meshing a cube and clipping in away.
I added some place holder cylinders for wheels to just to check the proportions all worked in 3D
I then refined the block out mesh, added the mud guards, bumpers and used a cube to Boolean out the rear section and front windscreen.
In hind site I probably could have used Zremesh to create smooth geometry, but instead I decided to box model using Zmodeller. I worked on the inside first , as it would be easier to extrude outwards to get the thickness I was after
Once the rear section and roll bar was complete I moved onto the floor, with a hump for the gearbox to pass through
Using QMesh to add some thickness helped bridge the two pieces together
then the foot wells and firewall
Then the bonnet.
I used the block out mesh as a guide the whole time.
I decided it would be a good idea to make the bonnet op-enable.
Here is the body almost complete with poly groups set up for easy creasing
With Dynamic Subdivision on
It took a couple of attempts to get the bonnet looking right. Eventually I created it as part of the body, and then split it off .
Added a metal material to check the highlights and make sure the body was looking smooth
Added the frame for the windshield, bumpers and headlights
Added mud guards
Next I spent some time on creating the wheels, Unfortunately I did not take any progress shots. I may create a project just on making them as they were a bit of challenge to get looking good, and to be quick to make.
After that I start creating the engine and other out of site items
Chassy rails, Engine and Swing arms. These components wont really be seen much, but they really add to the detail and make the car look less like a toy.
With the body hidden you can see all the other elements, Gearbox, Exhaust, Suspension and Diff.
Added Seats. you can see here without the wheels how much of the engine is exposed and would look odd if it was missing
Added wheels, almost complete.
Front Bash plate with speed holes added to the front to protect the Engine.
Spotlights and wiper blades added from another model, I also created the Dashboard, Steering wheel and peddles
I then used the poly groups I had to create the UV's in Zbrush.
Then off to Substance painter via Maya first to do some clean up and UV unifying and packing. I used this bright green paintwork originally just as a test, but I think I prefer it to the original concept
I also made a white paint scheme like the original concept. Still not sure which one is my favourite.
